I’m sharing a few ways we keep healthy eating a priority during busy days on-the-go without skipping the fun.
Getting your little ones to eat healthy can be a challenge, right? It gets even dicier when you have to be out and about.
Convenience foods aren’t always the most nutritionally dense choices, but there are some great options too. Here are a few ways we make eating healthy more doable on the go.
Tips for Healthy Eating On the Go
1. Pack Healthy Snacks
This is probably a no brainer, but having an arsenal of healthy options for the kids to enjoy only helps your cause.
It saves you time and money, plus you are in control of the choices. Some of our favorites include baby carrots, veggie straws, cashews & raisins, fruit & veggie pouches, fruit, mini sweet peppers, string cheese, and protein bars.
2. Plan Healthy Meals Around the Outing
Lately, many of our outings revolve around Northwestern baseball games. The kids absolutely LOVE to go to the field, and their favorite part is seeing daddy after the game.
Baseball games are long, so I know at least one meal will be at the field. I try to make that one as healthy as I can, but PB & J sandwiches are often the easiest choice. That means the other two meals are loaded with veggies and protein (in the hopes that the eat those as well!)
3. Limit Fast Food
By planning ahead and packing healthy snacks or meals, there is no need to depend on fast food. I’m so programmed to pack our own food, that I don’t even think about buying fast food.
The kids don’t seem to be missing out!
4. Allow for Occasional Treats
While we aim for mostly healthy eats, we don’t restrict the occasional treat!
Spencer loves taking Jada to Northwestern basketball games. It’s like their daddy-daughter date. And, she knows she gets a special treat when they do this: Dip-n-dots!
5. Sleep & Play
I have become pretty strategic, as we moms must be, in order to keep outings running as smooth as possible. Two other non-food factors that help the cause are sleep & play.
Making sure both of my kiddos are well rested, and even planning around nap times, helps make our experience out much better. Additionally, letting them play outside before or during our outing keeps them happy campers too. Fresh air is magic!
