My Journey to Lean: How I Lost Body Fat

Weight-loss is a controversial subject. I have been dependent on the scale in the past for my worth and value. That silly number meant it would be a good day or a blah day for me. Ridiculous.

I am a NSCA-CSCS.  I am not an RD or physician (although you may refer to me as Dr. Ponytail if you like), so be as critical as you wish with this post.

Here is a little gem that I recorded prior to my 2nd body composition test. Cooper makes his presence know multiple times throughout the video!

Supplements aren’t for everyone, but they work for me. However, not without proper diet and exercise like I mentioned before.

Here’s how I dropped 3% body fat in 8 weeks.

I was debating on whether to post my numbers, but I have gotten so many questions regarding GNC’s GenetixHD and whether it really works, that I wanted to show you my results.

According to the ACSM for my age range 30-39, 18% puts me in the well above average group (over the 90th percentile). There are many different charts out there though.

Personally, the most effective measurement for my progress is body composition and how well I can tackle my workouts. Not the scale.

I don’t count calories.

If I were in a figure competition, I would certainly be more diligent.

However, I have a general idea of what works for me. Ultimately, it’s how my clothes fit and how I feel that determines my food choices.

I feel strong.

Meal Plan & Supplement Stack

  • Typical Week Day
  • Training + Teaching Day
1. Typical Week Day
Pro-Sculpt (within 30-45 minutes of waking) be sure to mix this thoroughly.

3-4 oz. of lean deli turkey
1 low-carb tortilla

Snack:  Pumpkin Protein Cake with a heaping spoonful of nut butter.

Snack attacks & splurges:  light ice cream, peanut butter on a low-carb tortilla, cereal with protein powdermilk, trail mix, & gummy candy

These are rough examples of my typical diet and activity. It varies on the weekends when I am able to workout first thing in the morning–I love weekends!

Because I am using both the Pro-Sculpt and Meta-Ignite, I only take 1 serving of each/day.

Both products are thermogenics (stimulants), so I don’t need more than that. If you decide to just use one, then you can take the prescribed servings.

After 2 rounds of GenetixHD, I have noticed a change in how I look. I am leaner and the numbers show it.

Like I said, my eating is not perfect, and I give into cravings more than I’d like to admit. However, implementing the GenetixHD line with HIIT and CrossFit workouts has made a positive impact.

And, I still run regularly (especially with the Run Streak), but my mileage is relatively low compared to my marathon training.

  1. Hi! I am kind of new to your blog but I’ve been reading for a few weeks. Do any of the supplements make you jittery or anxious?

p.s. I love that annie’s poppyseed dressing. So good!

    • I do not experience those side effects, but some people really are sensitive to any sort of stimulant. With the Meta-Ignite or Pro-Sculpt, I would lessen the serving size to determine what works for your body.

      • Now that you’re pregnant, what do you take, if anything? Are these safe during pregnancy?

        • Kat, I just wrote a post on what I am taking, so that should answer your questions! :) “Reader Questions Part 2″

    • Anonymous says:

I am a 18 year old girl. Played softball and been athletic all my life. I LOVE lifting but I run at least two miles a day. Because I am so young it isn’t necessary to take supplements right? My goal is to get really lean and then build for volume

    • I don’t see a need for you to take supplements at this point. Vitamins are always good though! And, the TOTAL LEAN 25 would be a convenient source of protein for you. 25g of protein and 8g of fiber!

  2. Another FitFluential Ambassador here! I love your blog and finally have time to comment, which is perfect as I have a few questions!

This looks very interesting to both my husband and myself.
    - Would it work for males as well?
    - What would you need to change for marathon training? (I start training mid-August but will be starting to increase my weekly mileage soon.)
    - Do you only use the Ultra Mega Active Vitapak on certain days?

    Thanks so much! :)

    • Yes. The GenetixHD line is gender neutral :) The ProSculpt contains an Amino Acid blend which aids in preserving lean muscle while shredding fat.

I actually use the ProSculpt before morning runs on the weekend–with marathon training, you likely won’t see as drastic results unless you incorporate strength training into your routine.

I use the Ultra Mega Active Vitapak on most days! It’s great! Always have some packets in my purse!

  3. Dayyyyyyummmm girl…I knew you were looker tighter and more lean, but I didn’t realize how much until you put up pics! You look amazing!

  4. you look great Jess!! everything you’re doing is def. paying off! you deserve to be on the cover of “fitness” magazine!! it takes a lot of discipline & dedication to get to where you’re at. you inspire me to incorporate more strength training & variety into my regimen. keep it up! :) I’m sure your hubby is loving your results too!! :) xo

  5. What sort of negative side effects, if any, are there involved with the supplements? It almost seems too good to be true…

    • Some people experience increased heart rate and more sweating during a workout and possibly disrupting sleep if you take the products too late in the day. I take ProSculpt and Meta-Ignite before 4 p.m. so it doesn’t impact my sleep! ;)

    • Good to know. I didn’t mean to sound skeptical, but I’m always a little cautious when it seems too good to be true. You can definitely see results in your before-and-after pictures – there’s no doubt it works.

    • I think it is always important to exercise caution with supplements and you are right in doing so! I truly trust GNC products and have not experienced negative effects after 2 rounds, so I think I’m in the clear ;)

  6. Hey Jess- you are looking FABULOUS with the lower BF composition!! And the numbers prove it. Your diet looks great too.
Just curious what the stimulants are in the supplements. Are they caffeine, or something else?

  7. Wow, how motivating. I definitely want to look into these, but I do wonder, Will you continue taking these forever, or for the foreseeable future, or do you take a break between rounds, etc? Just wondering about what would happen to someones workouts, body fat percentage, etc once you go off of them.

    • I plan to continue to use GenetixHD and will likely give myself a week in between rounds so I don’t rely solely on it.

I love working out, so I don’t see falling “off the wagon” but sometimes I do need that boost to really nail my workouts and keep going! I’m all about maximizing my time! ;)

  8. You look super strong! Have you ever attempted to get this lean with the same type of exercise (HIIT, CF, and running) and eating, but without the supplements?

  9. You look super strong! Have you ever tried to get this lean with the same exercise and eating program, but without the supplements?

  10. I would not want to get in a fight with you. Your arms are JACKED!

  11. YAY!! So glad you posted this! I took the ProSculpt this morning before my run, HOLY ENERGY! I love it! I have the Physio-Burn in my pocket to take with lunch.

One question though… I usually go to CrossFit at 6 or 7pm, do you think that’s too late to take the MetaIgnite? Do you think it would still be as effective if I take it at 4pm? I guess I could just try it at 5/6pm and if I can’t sleep, I’ll know I should take it earlier!

I am SO SO SO inspired by you, Jess!! You are amazing. Thank you so much for answering all of my questions this week on Twitter!! You = AMAZING

    • THAT’S GREAT! I totally know what you mean–energizer bunny!

That may be kind of late in the day to use Meta-Ignite, but like you said, you can experiment and see!

i would also practice taking either thermogenic before a run so on race day you are used to it. ;)

  12. Hola beautiful! My question is really do you feel that dropping your total running to do the other training had a big impact? In other words would you feel as strong and lean doing marathon training.

Totally fascinated by your numbers as that is similar to me but you look more toned (k I’m kinda self critical)

    • It is really TOUGH for me, personally, to stay lean AND strong during marathon training. However, I’ve only trained for 2 fulls, so maybe that’s not a good reference. Halfs, 10k and 5k’s are sooooo much easier for me to train for and stay lean. Plus, I don’t feel the need to eat EVERYTHING in my kitchen post-long run! ha!

I know runners that can do both, but I haven’t found the magic recipe for that…yet! ;)

  13. I am super sensitive to stimulants – are there sample sizes that are available for purchase before making a big purchase? I think this is really interesting – I have been working out steadily for a year and a half now, I’m not overweight, but would like to add a little edge like you say. Also, what is the protein source in the protein powder? I’m a vegetarian and try to avoid whey and also soy, since I get so much soy from other sources.

  14. I am SO interested in these for when I stop nursing Em in a couple of months! Thanks for the awesome post and I will probably have questions then :)

  15. Ok, I’m so In!! Im determined to look like this for Hawaii in October! :)

  16. Jess, thank you so much for sharing this. I find it all so interesting. You look noticeably more sculpted in the 2nd picture. I always worry about taking supplements because of the possible health risks and I wouldn’t even know where to start. I feel like I have a lot of potential to become more fit but I actually feel like I’m at a stalemate right now and don’t know where to go. Any suggestions?

  17. Thank you for sharing and it shows that hard work pays off. The key is incorporating clean foods- which is what you are doing. Thank you for mentioning that because you can workout until you are blue in the face, but if you are not eating right- you will not have results. Way to go!

  18. you look strong!!!

  19. I always wondered exactly what someone needs to do to achieve the results you have, so thanks for sharing this! You really inspire me, and I’ve started doing some of your strength work outs which I really appreciate you sharing as well! I think that no matter what the scale or measurements say, your dedication and discipline and love for working out & running are what is amazing and motivating! Keep it up! Your blog has become on my of faves, and I look forward to each new post. The fact that I love Goldens and that Cooper is so cute doesn’t hurt either LOL :)

  20. Great post! I am wanting to drop some fat and gain muscle. I am in good shape, but there is always some jiggle that I could do without. I had my body fat tested the other day and it was 24% and I was shocked. I work out like a mad woman, but apparently not correctly, so I am on a mission to change my body. Thanks for the info:) Plus, I just singed up for the NASM cert. program and I want to be a good example:)

  21. Wow, you look amazing! I don’t think I have the drive to go that direction… I love to run, it is serious work to make myself lift, but I try to get in 2-3 sessions a week. I’m impressed!

  22. Umm you look straight up gangsta awesome! I KNOW what I need to do- I lift/workout every day but I allow more indulgences than I should to get the body i want and know I can have. Looking at you I know I just need to take a leap and just do it. You look rockin’ gf!

    • woo hoo! I gotta ‘gansta’ up in herrrre! Indulgences are totally part of life though–and I give in too, but having a a goal or event in mind certainly helps me make better decisions.

When I’m working out hard my body craves clean foods–a nice lil trade off!

  23. Hey Jess,
At the suggestion of your blog, I started taking the physic-burn vitapaks to “ease” into the full GenetixHD line. However, I’m nervous to add anything else, because if I’m pretty sensitive to caffeine. Since I mostly work out in the evenings, it is especially unrealistic to add in a caffeine supplement! Like you mentioned in an earlier comment, I’ve also noticed an increase in heart rate while exercising with the vitapak.

What product(s) do you suggest I add in? Do you recommend trying to work out earlier in the day so that I might be able to utilize a product earlier without it affecting my sleep?

I appreciate the help and have a good weekend!

    • Starting with the Physio-Burn packets is great–you must be sensitive to the green tea capsule? While CLA is part of the packet, you could add additional CLA capsules to every meal to support a lean physique with the effects of a stimulant.

You could still drink the ProSculpt first thing in the morning to get your metabolism revved and it wouldn’t impact you later in the day, but it is a stimulant, so you may notice a difference.

    • *without the effects of a stimulant! oops!

  24. Ooowww owww looking hot girl ;)

  25. I saw on your “bucket list” that you want to do a figure competition AND I think you should TOTALLY 100% do it. Jess your body is hard core right now. GO FOR IT! :)

  26. You look great! How many times a week do you try to do cardio?

That protein ice cream seriously makes my mouth water, by teh way. Haha!

    • I run 4-5x/ week usually (but with the RUN streak everyday till July 4th) and I try to do 2 HIIT/CrossFit WoD’s in addition to my HIIT classes! Short and sweet workouts but uber effective! :)

  27. Hey Jess, Great to see your hard work paying off. Always a good thing. You mention pb on tortilla…well, one of my favorite treats while hiking is a tortilla w/ peanut butter and orange slices. Try it – it sounds strange but the orange packs such a nice punch of juice. Mmmm!

  28. Fantastic results, not that you NEEDED them ;) Like I’ve said before, I’m glad you talk about this line because there is so much out there. I am very sensitive to stimulants, but I love them, lol. So next time I want to cycle one, I am going to try this. Question: Are you concerned with artificial sweeteners in the pro-sculpt?

    • That’s a great question. The artificial sweetener, sucralose, in Pro-Scuplt is the 2nd to last ingredient. Sucralose actually is not broken down by our body, it simply sweetens, then we pee it out (so it is safe). Aspartame is chemically altered by our body–so that is one to avoid, but you are in the clear with ProSculpt! ;)

  29. Girl, you have NO idea how much I loved this post. I READ IT MORE THAN ONCE and I assure you I will read it again and again. It’s fantastic. I love your honesty. I seriously cannot thank you enough. This is so interesting and I really would love to give these products a try. You explain everything so well and seriously, thank you for sharing your meal plan too! People rarely do that!?

  30. You look fantastic and are really motivating me to get to work on my own strength training and physique! I have a problem that may be entirely different, however. I am mainly a runner (my first and main love) but I am also by nature prone to lose “too much” mass. I know everyone always wants that in theory, however, I don’t like losing bootylicious either :-( My sports chiro recommended that I pump up even more protein and I also had a talk at GNC a couple weeks ago about this. How to add some more for mass but not be ridiculous with it (ie I don’t want to be a body builder, just keep good muscle mass). I just worry I am running off my muscles sometimes. They have me supplementing with GNC’s Pro Performance AMP Wheybolic Extreme 60 but taking only 1/3 of the serving size since I do get protein throughout the day via whole food as well and 60 is overkill on my frame size. Just always hoping to find the best solution for increasing muscle mass combined with running! Always great to read all of your tips, btw! And I did get a fitness mat at Target now too. A pretty turquoise Gaiam. Works well for me :-)

    • I actually had a class participant ask me this very question last night in class! She is a runner and naturally thin like you, but wants to gain weight (muscle) Besides protein to help with recovery and repair, making sure the supplements you take have an amino blend is important–to hold you hold onto that VALUABLE muscle.

P.s. I know I’m a stronger runner now that I was a year ago–core and upper body make a difference!

      I love turquoise! ;)

    • Thanks for the tip! I will definitely take that to heart and make sure to keep up with that. :-) I know it sounds weird, but I want more “junk in the trunk” ha ha!

    • More “junk in the trunk” mean a more powerful runner! ow-owww!

  31. Whatever you’re doing is certainly working! Thanks for sharing the regimen with us :)

  32. Thanks for sharing this post. You are really working hard and it shows.
So how much does all the products end up costing monthly?

    • If you have a Gold Card thru GNC each item is $40. There are coupons out there too for a better deal. If you only want to try one product, I was told by GNC reps that the ProSculpt is the one to purchase!

  33. Will you continue to use Genetix when you are training for Hood to Coast? I am training for a six hour ultra, so running is my primary goal, but I don’t want to lose any of the progress I’ve made in my cross training.

    • Absolutely as I still plan to incorporate strength training into my routine. I regularly drink the ProSculpt before runs and it’s a great boost!

For an Ultra, I’m guessing you want to make sure you preserve muscle and ProSculpt would aid in that.

  34. Umm you look amazing. I die every time you post pictures on Instagram! I love your arms and shoulders. They are looking so ripped! I have never taken an kinds of supplements before but they definitely look like they work! Awesome progress, Jess!! Keep on doing what you’re doing!

  35. love this post!! its so helpful!! ur arms look amazing btw…thanks for the info!

  36. Wowww! The picture with your shoulder and biceps is amazing :) Wish I could find a healthy girlfriend with such a healthy body and passion for fitness. Just a quick question : have you ever done the Visual Impact for women of Rusty Moore? You definitely got this slim, fit look Maybe some other women out there would like to learn about it . I’ll let you read this article http://perfectbodyreview.com/visual-impact-for-women-review/ Hope you like it :)

Jess – You do look great! I am not, nor plan to be, in any kind of competition, but have thought about using supplements like this to boost the burn as my whole body is getting leaner with HIIT, resistance training and a small change in how I eat, yet my belly has this nice little padding of fat that doesn’t seem to be going ANYWHERE (post 2 children who are now in their very early teens and a rectus diastisis which is separation of the abdominal muscles only corrected by surgery – whew, that was a lot! :) ). However, I am concerned if/when someone goes off of these, does it totally screw up your normal metabolism? Sort of like when you are on antibiotics too much, it lowers your natural immune system defense. If you have any info on this, could you let me know? Thanks a bunch!!! Michele C.

    • Michele, that is a great question and concern. Ultimately, diet and exercise are the driving forces to a lean physique. Adding a thermogenic line like GenetixHD maximizes your time in the gym or on a run helping shed those last (annoying) lbs of fat.

I plan to take “breathers” in between rounds so my system doesn’t become desensitized to it! :)

    • Anonymous says:

Thanks so much! Love your site – have added many of your workouts ideas to my routines!!!

    • Thank you! Glad you are liking the workouts!

  38. Are these supplements safe to use in combination with thyroid meds? Do you have any experience working with anyone with thyroid imbalances? I am going to start the CLA and see if it makes a difference. I have no thyroid and supplement with daily 112 mcg of levothyroxin. Any info or thoughts? I run20/25 miles a week and do insanity, p90x or the elliptical 4/5 times a week.

    • CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is derived from safflower oil & shouldn’t impose risk. It is dairy, wheat, and gluten free as well. but, GNC still advises you consult your physician before use.

Hi, Thanks for the great information. And congrats on your success! I check your blog regularly and am always inspired. I am almost 50-yrs old, run approx 20 miles/week, lift 3 x/week, and do a group cross fit type workout 2 x/week. I am interested in supplements as I would love a leaner look. My question: (finally) I have hypertension, and won’t likely ever take a thermogenic type stimulant. But I’m very curious about the CLAs you mention. I plan to do some research and stop by the local GNC, but I’m wondering if you think they are as useful as the thermogenics? Maybe they aren’t worth the money I’d spend, and I should simply work harder on the clean eating! Thanks for your time.

    • Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I do believe the CLA supplements would be an effective addition to your plan; however, they won’t be quite as effective as a thermogenic. But, with your medical condition, you obviously shouldn’t take a stimulant (like you said).

Your exercise plan looks like it is ON POINT. Continue to monitor your diet making sure you are getting enough protein. I do love the Total Lean 25 b/c there is 25g of protein AND 8g of fiber–tough to find!

  40. I never thought you could be leaner…you are a rock star! Don’t know how you do it! Looking good girl!!

  41. Okay girl…you ROCK!
I’m going to email you …. I need to make some changes. Maybe you can help me, in exchange for Hotel Jill in a few weeks :) .
    xoxo

  42. Jess – You look absolutely amazing (as you always have)!!! Dr.Ponytail, I love it! Your arms look super killer – I’m so jealous. Kudos on all your hard work.

  43. Incredible job, Jess! Hard word pays off, and it definitely shows :)

  44. Couldn’t agree with you more. I have dropped to under 6% body fat (5.3% and I’m proud of it) and my weight has been consistent between 142 and 144 lbs. I will drop it to 140 when race day comes but not concerned about it.

Hard work pays off. There is a reason that is a cliche’ and that’s because its true.

You look great and keep up the hard work…..it shows!

    • Jason, you are amazing. One of my kitchen idols and fav endurance athletes. You go IM!!!

    • The best part is that this shit is HARD but we get up and keep moving forward. Keep progressing. We hit a bump in the road we don’t stop and cry over it. We spit on the bruise, bandage it up and keep moving forward.

People will come with you or they won’t, but guess what…..people will come with you or they won’t regardless of what you do so you might as well live your life your way and be happy…….and WORK HARD!

    • It’s the journey! Well said! Keep staying after Jason!!

  45. Absolutely amazing!!

  46. I bought the stuff yesterday thanks to this post. I have a question and didn’t read the five million above me, so sorry if it’s a repeat. What would you do if you (I) work out right when I wake up? This morning I drank the sculpt powder and took one of the ignite pills, but then I read that they aren’t meant to be taken together. Sooo–say I just drank the powder upon waking up, then worked out, when would the pills fit in? xoxo

    • Hey Janetha! You can most definitely use both the Meta-Ignite pills and the ProSculpt, you simply don’t need as many servings.

I did the VERY thing you did this AM. I drank the ProSculpt and took 1 pill before my progression run.

If you are doing a heavy lifting workout, I think the ProSculpt is stellar b/c it has an amino acid blend in addition to the thermogenic blend.

The Meta-Ignite has 2x the caffeine that ProSculpt has, so if you have a longer workout, the Meta-Ignite is going to really help you stay strong & intense throughout!

    • I knew you would have a good answer! Thanks, woman. Drinking the sculpt now–preworkout (my workouts are similar to crossfit but a little different)–gotta say, though, it makes me kinda gaggy. haha.. i guess i will get used to it! i have been spoiled with the great taste of fitmixer aminos.

      thanks for everything! xoxoxo

    • You bet! You may want to dilute the Pro-Sculpt more…I add 10-12 oz of water plus ice. I’m anxious to follow your journey!! hugs!

  47. You look great and your plans seem on point. When I started HIT and less cardio I dropped a lot of body weight, but I’m interested in the supplements. How much of the loss is from them and how much from a change in routine?

    • I started incorporating HIIT and CrossFit into my routine 6 months ago and definitely noticed a difference! However, the GenetixHD line helped me go longer and harder, so it really was a winning combo (for me personally) to change my physique! Congrats to you Carissa!! Love your workouts!

  48. You seriously look A-MAZING! I am definitely inspired to get my cardio-loving butt to do some strength training when I see these pics!

  49. Interesting! I have never supplemented with anything other than whey. What is in these?

  50. First, thank you so much for doing this post…I LOVE IT!! I think I am going to start the GNC program tomorrow! I know that you are supposed to drink the Pro Sculpt first thing in the morning, but what should I do if I usually do my run/workout as soon as I get up. I don’t think I could run if I drink that right before I run and I don’t have time to wait between.

    • Great question Kelley. If I were you, I would just switch the order. Take your Meta-Ignite in the morning pre-run/workout and drink Pro-Sculpt throughout the day. Totally understand a sloshy stomach!! :)

  51. You look amazing! I haven’t done supplements before (don’t even take my multi-vitamins.. oy) but it’s something I’m considering and this post really helped explain the value for beginners like myself. Great post.

  52. SUCH a great post! Love it all!

  53. Hi there!
I’m currently training for RAGBRAI and saw that long distance bikers and endurance athletes should take beta alanine to help with muscle fatigue. But I have a worry-does taking these sorts of supplements interfer with birth control? I am extremely anemic and my doctor wants me taking tons of iron but I heard a rumor that it interfers with BC so I haven’t been taking it and thus I’m exhausted all the time…(really helps with training! :) ) I just thought I’d ask. Thanks!

  54. Jess I get overwhelmed with all these powders and pills. Trying to figure out Wha to take. Here is how my day goes: I usually get up at 7am, get to the gym 8/or 8:30am. I do my weight routine first then my cardio 5 days a week. I have been eating clean for 6 months now and have dropped 25 pounds. My goal for my arms for example is to look something like yours in the picture above. I will drink protein powder with water when I’m finished with my weights and cardio. Also is total lean 25 just a protein powder? What is your advice for me.

    • Hi Kim! I know–it can be so daunting! Based on your typical day, I would do ProSculpt in the AM it has the thermogenics AND AA’s for lean muscle. If you only do one thermo, that’s the one to do.

Congratulations on your success thus far!! WOW! 25 lbs! Total Lean 25 is a protein powder with 25g protein and 8g fiber. There are also other products in the TL 25 line as well, like b-fast bars, etc. I LOVE the powder–mixes easy and tastes delicious.

  55. Jess, I usually eat within a hour of waking up which is usually oatmeal with fruit, almonds. Would I do the pro sculpt right after I eat my breakfast or wait a little bit? I think it said pro sculpt 30 min before you start your workout. IS the pro sculp just used to give you extra energy?

    • Prosculpt can either be consumed within 30 mins of waking or prior to a workout. I use it pre-run/CrossFit a lot because I don’t feel full with it. But, if I’m really going somewhere fast, then I take Meta-Ignite! :)

Prosculpt has 200mg caffeine, tripepper blend and AA blend.

So happy to have found it. I started my weight loss journey May 2011 weighing 218lbs. As of today I have lost 63 lbs. i used the supplement from Gnc called oxyelite pro. I lost weight and body fat. I hAven’t taken any supplement in over 6 months but I just bought the Mega-Ignite and found your review. My question is, being now 160lbs, will this help me lost more body fat and get more lean? I also eat right and go to the gym 5 days a week, do boot camp, kickboxing classes, weights, treadmill, and aning other things at the gym. I really want to define my abs as well, and get rid if the fat in that area. I also drink muscle milk protein with unsweetend soy milk in the morning and I go to the gym in the afternoon. I really overall want to lower my body fat as much as possible and get lean like u! Lol my goal is 145lbs and be as lean as possible. Thank you!!

  57. I just bought the Mega-Ignite and it says take 3 pills. Is it absolutely necessary to take the 3 or 1-2 be sufficient? It just seems like a lot!

    • Hi Ari! 3 pills of Meta-Ignite have 400 mg of caffeine, so if you are sensitive, start with 1 or 2 (I believe it says that on the bottle). For me personally, I take 3.

    • Not sensitive at all! Took 3 today and felt great! Used to take Burn 60 by GNC and became immune to it pretty much and then just fished a supplement my gym sells but I feel I reached my max with that. Since starting my new lifestyle of health and fitness I’ve lost 25 pounds. I was never very much overweight to begin with but now I have the toning and well, the dreaded tummy area to take care of. Hoping this will do something for me! Thanks for the response and being an inspiration! :)

  58. Hi! I’m training for my first half marathon so running around 15-20 miles a week and try to do some weights at least twice a week with a day of cross training (i.e. a spin class). I am looking to lose those last 8 pounds. I try to get enough protein. Do you think I need the whole line of supplements or could I just try one to start? Which would you recommend trying first for someone totally new to any supplements besides protein powder?

    • Hi Lauren! I have used both Meta-Ignite and Pro-Sculpt before my runs with fab results (no side effects). You certainly don’t need all the supplements, they are just meant to work together. Pro_sculpt gives you more bang for your buck as a thermogenic with amino acids for lean muscle support, but if you prefer pills, then Meta-Ignite is the way to go. And, be sure to get the protein post-run! ;)

  59. I bought Mega Ignite a couple of weeks ago, I really like it..lost 5 lbs! I was wondering if I should take it everyday, even if I am not working out, or just take it before workouts only? Currently I am taking it only before workouts. Thanks!

    • Hi Nikki! I can only tell you my personal preference as each person is unique. I take it primarily for intense workouts because it gives me an edge. On days I don’t workout, I still might pop 1-2 pills if I hit the afternoon slump! ha!

I was wondering what your suggestion was for protein. I just found your site today so forgive me if you posted this on another page, I havent been able to stop reading and learning since I found it!! Anyways, i’m not as active right now as I’d like to be so I don’t want the bloat. I’m putting in an hour 4days/week, mostly strength with a little cardio.
Thank you SOOO much for your blog! It’s real talk for women that need a straight answer!

    • Thanks for your sweet comment! I use GNC powders and like Total Lean 25, AMP 60, and WHEY. There is also Egg Protein if you are lactose intolerant!!

  61. Hi Jess!!! Love this website!!! It’s my go to for home workouts :)
Thank you for all the information you provide here.
    I have a few questions:
I have been working out (HIT, Strength training, and just began running) for a few months. I do see a difference in my body but not as much as I’d like. I typically carry weight and fat in my lower body. After having my son, I noticed a loss of muscle tone there, especially in my backside.
How often should I be working out lower body to see a difference? I squat like crazy and see no build in muscle tone.

Also the pro sculpt, can that be taken later in the day? I normally workout early afternoon (when my son naps)

My goal is to drop body fat and tone up. Thanks in advanced!

    • HI Harley. I can only offer my personal experience not truly advise you “how” to take the products. There is some caffeine in the ProSculpt, so as long as you aren’t super sensitive to caffeine, you likely could try it! ;) And, for lower body strengthening, you shouldn’t go more than 72 hours or 3 days without doing strength training–if we don’t use it, we lose it! :( HIIT workouts will help you shed body fat, so you can see that lean muscle. Also, don’t be afraid to lift heavy weights! That will really change your physique!! GOOD LUCK!

  62. Hi Blonde Ponytail!

I am new to your webpage, as well as the healthy lifestyle. I am 23 years old, graduating college this semester, and attending graduate school in the fall. I spend most of my time locked up in a study room in the library and have a stress eating habit. In the last few months, I have been trying to make a serious attempt to lose weight, and get healthy, not just to ditch the extra 30 lbs I have, but to genuinely lead a healthy lifestyle for LIFE! I have been doing crossfit style body weight workouts, using weights, and running, as well as cut processed foods, fast foods, baked goods, and soda from my diet. I do take vitamin supplements to help boost metabolism, but with all the work that I am putting in, and the dedication to my diet, it took 4 months for me to drop 10 pounds, and honestly though my jeans fit differently, I am not losing inches or going down sizes. I still feel that after all the work Im doing, I am not going anywhere. I love your workouts and supplement posts, and I want to know if you have any supplement reccomendations for beginners, women who haven’t really got a clue what they are doing, but will maximize the work they are putting in. I am just nervous of starting some of these hard core supplements. or should I just get over my fear, and jump in with both feet?

Thanks for all your inspiration and help!

    • HI Speechie. Great question. I can only share what supplements have worked for me and cannot make recommendations. It may not hurt to visit at GNC store and tell the salesperson you have not used supplements so they can recommend something with less of stimulant affect. Vitamins and fish oil are great places to start though! ;) Good luck and keep working hard! It WILL pay off!
