With the opening of the movie, I had to teach a Hunger Games inspired HIIT class this week.
Don’t worry, we didn’t try to kill each other in class…but I did give everyone the option to swallow the berries.
In class, we did modified tabatas (6 sets instead of 8) of every move with 45-60 seconds of jump roping in between. I also like the option of 30:15 x 4 of every move. It’s up to you, tributes.
As tributes, we were tested with this workout making the 30 minutes of core work following HIIT class challenging.
The Katniss Planks were downright difficult halfway through the sets, and the Buns Catching Fire move lived up to its name.
1. Which move is your favorite? Heidi said she liked the reaping burpees.
2. What character would you like to see in the Hunger Games workout?
3. Do you think Cooper is ALWAYS taking a nap? (Sure seems like it!)

Today was Tabata Thursday at the CrossFit Box! 4 sets of Tabatas – TRX rows, Hand Release Push Ups, KB swings and squats. No rest between the sets. AKA 32 20/10. Ahhhhhh!
Sounds INTENSE Laura!
Something badass with Cato’s name would do. I want to mention a cooldown, yoga pose with Rue’s name attached, but that might be offensive, haha.
Kim, I’m totally thinking Rue needs to make an appearance. Maybe some graceful plyometric jumps?
Yes! I love this!
The reaping burpee looks INTENSE..as in, 10 reaping burpees would be an accomplishment lol. Great move!!
Thanks Sabrina–its one of those leave it all out there moves at the end of class!
lol that is hilarious! I saw the movie on Saturday, and though it was awesome! I’m already tearing through the first book – and it great. I’m with Trying is for Little Girls, Rue could make an appearance. My favorite character in Hunger Games is probably Katniss or Cinna.
Good call Nelly! Cinna and Rue need to make an appearance!
Burpees are the best! (and worst) but such a great full body move and adding the tuck jump amps it up a notch!
Those burpees look crazy intense! I love the movie themed workout. Definitely think Rue & Cinna need to be represented
I feel so out of the loop on Hunger Games. I know it’s a movie, that’s it. In fact, it sounds like it could be a flick about eating contests? LOL
ha! You must succumb to the peer pressure Jess! It is SO worth the hype–more than even Twilight!
Looks like a crazy fun workout!! Gonna have to pin it to try one day soon!
Let me know what you think when you try it!!
Oh my goodness, all of those moves look awesome! Maybe some Haymitch moves?? hehe…love it!
Ys. Haymitch and we can drink afterwards!
I LOVE IT! I took this class with Jess and the moves were intense! Dare I suggest more leg moves with Rue flowing plie squats with curls or something like that?
Or maybe goblet plie squats would be more appropriate for Haymitch?? We could raise our goblets at the bottom.
Hugs! You were a studette in class! Yes, Rue must make an appearance!! I like the way you are thinking!
love this! saw the movie last night so this sounds like so much fun!
Heather I can’t wait to see this moving (but I am so why do I keep saying that?!)!
This looks so fun! I agree with the above comments – a Cinna move needs to come into play somewhere!
oh yes! Cinna! Good call! Thanks for checking this out!
I want to come to your class!! You are so awesome and fun!
Aw! i wish you could!
It kills me that Coop just lays there and watches you bust your ass! Tals can’t handle it when I workout at home– she gets all up on me, sniffing, jumping, playing, and trying to interfere in anyway possible
ha ha! Tals and Coopy would be pals–he just is indifferent to me working out–but if my hubby is, he thinks its a game!
Ha, this is awesome!
Your class would kick my scrawny butt right now!! Seeing Hunger Games tonight!!
You mean your freaking legit, cut body?! I think you’d do very well!
This is so fun – I loved the books! Also, I am 100% jealous of your ability to do push-ups so well. You look awesome, Jess! Doing this tomorrow morning
Thanks Sam! Push-ups are hard for me–but I’m getting better–the katniss plank kicked me though!
i havne’t seen or read the book, but the workout looks great!
Thanks Amanda! I had no idea how much I would LOVE the books!
Good think I’m not a Hunger Games fan…I’d hate to have to do that workout!
When I see you in CO this summer, we’re doing this!
Fun post!
Just did this workout, felt strong doing it and loved it. I modified the push-ups from my knees. The Reaping Burpees were killer at the end.
Thanks for an awesome workout!
So glad you tried it out! woo hoo! Oh yes, Reaping burpees are toughies!
Love this!! What about Rue’s Mountain (or tree!) Climbers?
Cooper is a cutie. I have a Copper as well – he’s a beagle and he’s getting pretty old (turns 14 in August!) but he’s still bounding with energy – no sleeping with him!
Aw! So glad YOUR Cooper is still a pup! Totally think Rue’s agility needs to make an appearance next!
Love this!!! Thanks for sharing this. I love all those moves. I love a good challenge and they look challenging for sure.
Thanks Andrea! I’m developing a core specific Hunger Games workout too!
I did this workout today and all I have to say is WOW! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you tried it and liked it!
Just completed this workout as well as your summer Ab routine, i was SO SWEATY! loved it, thank you! I’m not into lifting and I always need inspiration and motivation for strength training, i’ll definitely be incorporating this into my routine more often.
How often do you do tabata or HIIT workouts?
Glad you liked it Pamela!! I try to do HIIT/CrossFit workouts 4x/week. I love how short and effective they are!
hi, could you explain the “30:15 x 4 of every move” option? I assume the tabata option is just 20 seconds of each move as fast as possible, then 10 sec break before the next move.
It means 30 seconds of work followed by 15 seconds of rest for 4 rounds.
