Half Marathon This Weekend: One DNS & One PR

Originally, I was supposed to run the Girlfriends Half Marathon in Vancouver, WA on Sunday.  The event offered a transfer option where you can transfer your registration to another person or postpone it till the next year.
I had to make the decision a month ago and at that time my plantar fasciitis was screaming at me.  As a result, I deferred my registration till 2012, so I technically don’t have DNS (did not start) on my record.
Fortunately, my training for the Rock-N-Roll Las Vegas half marathon has been going well, so when my friend Stacey mentioned a $10 half marathon this weekend, I was in.
No, that wasn’t a typo.  Seriously, a $10 half marathon fee and the event was chip timed!  The Lewis & Clark half marathon took place in Clarkston, WA which is only 30 minutes south of me, and the elevation is at 700-800′ vs. my normal training of +2700′.
Greenbelt Trail
The race is an out-and-back on the flat Greenbelt Trail next the Snake River.  Weather was perfect: mid 50′s and no wind (rain stopped during registration).  I hadn’t run 13.1 miles since June, so I didn’t have a real plan of attack for this race and thought it could serve as a training run.
Stacey and I ran the first 8 miles together.  During that time, we dedicated our miles to Harmony and her husband who was recently diagnosed with cancer. We prayed for strength, hope, endurance.  We prayed for their children, for understanding, the doctors, and for them.
1- 8:11
2- 8:16
3- 8:08
4- 8:13
I was concerned we were starting too fast, but the conditions were just right for a fast race, so didn’t want to be overly conservative either.
5- 8:16
6- 8:27
7- 8:22
Obviously, miles 6 and 7 were slower.  My legs were tired, and I became increasingly concerned that I had tapped out–I’m still learning so much about racing. I’ve only raced one half marathon with Coach.  The Rock-N-Roll Seattle half marathon that I ran with Mel and Amanda was for fun (and it WAS a blast!).
8- 8:16
9- 8:19
There was a speedy girl in a purple top that I was trying to keep in sight, but her pace was too much for me (some day).  I was getting really tired, but I kept envisioning an even stride length: turn-it-over.
10- 8:02
11- 8:08
Only 2 more miles. Thinking about Harmony and her family.  Push through the pain (TWSS) it will be over in less than 20 minutes, right?
12- 8:04
13- 7:55

Finish time: 1:47:09
Constipated or getting my flex on?
I’m most proud that my last 4 miles were my fastest, and I ended up getting 3rd in the 30-39 age group and earned a 3 minute PR. The winning female ran a 1:25 at the age of 43.  Holy speedy.
There were around 200 participants and the event had several aid stations throughout the course.  I wasn’t expecting anything post race, I mean we paid $10, but there was a great selection of post-race food including bananas, sliced oranges, mozzarella sticks, gluten-free crackers, pretzels and bagels.
The Lewis & Clark State College cross country team provided the chip timing and the Seaport Striders hosted the event.  Thank you!
While I know I missed out on the Girlfriends Half Marathon and hanging with stellar chics like Kim, Julie and Amanda, the LC Half involved a 30 minute commute and nice alternative to those of us on the eastern edge of the Pacific Northwest.
After the race, my GI tract was in eliminate mode but thankfully I did not SUAR my shorts.  I spent the rest of the day as a little sausage in my compression Recovery Socks and Aspaeris shorts.
